Ode to Summer

The place is called Two Huts and it is where every tourist (well, it certainly seems so) congregates in the late afternoon. A view of the sunset over the mossy and often mist covered green hills is the main draw. There is plenty of food and drinks which is the universal gift of being in Thailand. And this evening, as Urja and I arrive, there is live music...a young man singing ballads as he strums on the guitar.

The air is beginning to cool and still carries the heat of the day. Palpable is the relaxation in the air...no one is in a rush. It feels like someone set the frame rate to 120 suddenly! As we sit on this log swing, the present moment is throbbing, alive and time feels suspended. There is my breath, all these people doing their thing, the sounds, the air, the smells...all separate and yet in a continuous whole! Everything feels both sharper and slower...or maybe not slower, at the right pace!

Then, there is a redolence of summers past, other times, other places. I am able to feel the present and notice that it carries the fragrance of that long gone August evening in Atlanta, listening to jazz on the College Commons, sipping sweet iced tea out of massive glass tumblers, laying on a tangle of sweaty sun-tanned arms and legs, replete at the end of a long care free summer!

This being totally in the present and feeling the sweetness of a memory is very different from any nostalgia or memory-laning. Here and now is what is real! And the gift of that unexpected echo is a whiff, a flavour almost that enriches the present. It never distracts me from what is unfolding in the moment, it enhances it!

I took this video 👇🏾 that evening!
